Diamond Care

Diamonds are among the most sought-after and romantic gemstones on the planet. Since ancient times diamonds have been used for decorative items, with some of the earliest references tracing back to India. Most famously desired for engagement rings, diamonds have symbolized undying love since the 15th century. To ensure these treasures maintain the stone's brilliance and sparkle, follow these instructions on how to clean diamonds. Soak the diamonds in warm water with a mild detergent and gently scrub the gem with a soft brush. To further restore diamonds to their original breathtaking luster dry your stone with a soft cloth. If you desire professional care, take your diamonds to an accredited jeweler who can use an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner, which utilizes a mixture of water and high frequency waves, to completely polish and transform your piece. It is wise to have professional diamond care and cleaning once a year, so that your jeweler can inspect the settings, prongs and stones to ensure they remain secure.

Emerald Care

Emeralds have been coveted the world over for more than 4,000 years for their rich luster and vivid color. This alluring gem has adorned the crowns of royals and embellished the thrones of some of the most respected dynasties in history, including Cleopatra. Emeralds occasionally require care to maintain their luster. Emeralds have traditionally been oiled to protect their structure and to diminish visual inclusions so they require a gentle touch when being cared for. To restore the shine of emerald jewelry use lukewarm water and a dampened cloth or a soft brush. Thoroughly drying these gems with a soft, dry cloth will further enhance their radiance and sparkle. Emeralds cannot sustain the pressure of ultrasonic jewelry cleaners, and harsh chemicals should also be avoided. Store emeralds in individual compartments to prevent scratches that can occur when they come in contact with other gems.

Sapphire Care

Since 8000 BC, Sapphires have been prized as illustrious gemstones. Ancient rulers of Persia believed the earth rested on a giant sapphire and its reflections colored the sky. Some religions believed the intense color of the sapphire represented the heavens. Worn by Princess Diana as her engagement ring gemstone, sapphires are considered to be the symbol of pure and wise rulers. As one of the hardest and most durable gemstones, sapphires can endure more intensity when it comes to rejuvenating these gemstones. Ultrasonic cleaners can be used on sapphires, but avoid these cleaners if your sapphire jewelry is set with stones other than diamonds or rubies. Household ammonia cleaning solution diluted at least 50 percent with lukewarm water makes an ideal cleaning solution for sapphires and leaves them without a haze. After making the solution, soak sapphires for 10 to 20 minutes, and rub them with a soft brush. Wipe with a soft cloth. Do not use an ammonia cleaning solution if soft and porous gems such as pearls or opals are also faceted to your jewelry.

Pearl Care

Pearls are relatively soft and porous, so it is important to know how to clean pearls properly. The word pearl has become a metaphor for something rare, admirable and valuable. The most sought after pearls are those discovered in the wild for their rarity however most pearls are farm grown. Pearls remain delicate and admired accessories often stitched together as a strand of the same size or graduated in size which make beautiful necklaces and bracelets. To keep a Pearl's luster, wipe them with a soft cloth after each use. Ammonia cleaning solution or harsh detergents should never be used when cleaning pearls due to their fragile nature. Avoid abrasive cleaners and cloths with pearl jewelry. Simply wipe pearls with a soft cloth and a mild soap and water solution to maintain their iridescence.

Ruby Care

Considered one of the precious stone family along with sapphires, emeralds, natural pearls and diamonds, Rubies are envied for their rich red color. The history of the ruby is steeped in medicine and mystery and for centuries rubies were used to cure ailments and bring valor to warriors. Once known as the “king of gems,” ruby jewelry is still popularly enjoyed among royals including Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, who received a ruby engagement ring from Prince Andrew. Rubies possess a resilient exterior and ultrasonic jewelry cleaners, can aid in rejuvenating these exquisite gems. You can also soak your rubies in warm soapy water for ten minutes before using a soft brush to clean their exterior. Rinse your precious stone with water and dry with a soft towel.

Tanzanite Care

Discovered in the hills of Northern Tanzania in 1967, Tanzanite derives its name from the country in which it was uncovered. Most commonly found in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, tanzanite is very rarely a pure blue and often exhibits rich purple overtones. Rare and ravishing, tanzanite is a delicate gemstone. Cleaning tanzanite jewelry requires extra effort and extra care. Gather lukewarm water and a very mild detergent and use a soft brush to gently clean the gem. Rinse well, and use a soft cloth to dry completely. Protect tanzanite from knocks, pressure and extreme temperature change to keep the gems gleaming. Ultrasonic jewelry cleaners should not be used on tanzanite jewelry.

Gold Care

Follow these tips on how to clean gold to ensure longevity of your precious items. Prior to cleaning gold jewelry, always examine the setting to ensure your gems are secure and well fastened. Soak gold jewelry in a mild detergent and warm water solution. Avoid ammonia cleaning solution and chlorine as they can discolor the metal. Carefully rinse the gold and thoroughly dry with a soft cloth. Remove any remaining moisture to allow your gold to shine brilliantly, while avoiding any dullness that can occur if excess moisture remains.

Silver Care

Use caution and follow these steps on how to clean silver as it is a soft and delicate metal that can be scratched. Reinvigorate your sterling silver jewelry by cleaning it with a 100% cotton cloth. A small amount of mild detergent and warm water is all that is needed for a light cleaning. Avoid using a harsher cleaner as it could damage the polish on the stones. For a deeper cleaning use a silver jewelry cleaner or silver polish spray, however do not let these products touch the gemstones as they can damage porous stones.

Platinum Care

Platinum is distinct from all other metals - it is rare, pure and precious. Our platinum bridal jewelry represents deep true love: as rare as the metal itself. Platinum is the superior option when purchasing an engagement or wedding ring. Its subtle luster enhances stones rather than overshadowing their natural beauty. Due to the metal's durability and strength, your stones will be held securely in place for a long time. While platinum is very durable, it can still scratch like all precious metals. To clean platinum jewelry, use a mild solution of soap and warm water and gently rub with a soft cloth. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals as they may discolor faceted gemstones.

Palladium Care

Palladium makes great jewelry. It stays white, is durable, and as time goes on, new jewelry applications for this metal are inevitable. Yet, the most exciting thing about Palladium is that it is precious and pure. Palladium's purity and preciousness make it an extremely attractive value when compared to the lesser non-precious jewelry metals, like the titanium and tungsten steel that spots the market today. It is durable, so wedding bands made of Palladium will stand the test of time. Palladium is naturally white, so Rhodium plating is not necessary. To clean palladium, use a mild solution of soap and warm water with a soft brush. Dry the palladium jewelry with a soft cloth.

Tungsten Carbide Care

Cleaning and care for tungsten jewelry is very simple. A soft cloth or jewelry polishing cloth will take care of any prints or smudges. If needed, you can take a soft tooth brush and use a small amount of mild detergent and gently brush. Be to sure to rinse the soap off and pat dry with a soft cloth.

Rhodium Care

Rhodium is a precious metal that is very difficult to work with, so rhodium plating is often used. To care for your rhodium-plated jewelry, clean it with a mild detergent mixed with a little water, rinse well, and dry thoroughly. It may also be cleaned with a silver-polishing cloth. Don't use liquid jewelry dips; the chemicals used can cause the plating to wear off more quickly. Avoid rubbing rings against other surfaces and always remove rings when doing heavy work.
