Birthstone Jewelery – The Beginning

Posted by on 1/16/2011
Birthstone jewelery has its place in many cultures throughout history, beginning with the Book of Exodus in the Old Testament circa 1250 B.C. Aaron, brother of Moses, was named the first High Priest of the Jews. A religious ceremonial breastplate, designed for him, was adorned with twelve stones representing the twelve tribes of Israel and some believe the 12 signs of the zodiac. Over time, the association of certain colored gems and precious stones with the twelve signs of the zodiac became more widely accepted. Since the twelve signs correspond roughly with the months of the year and each sign has its own name and characteristics, certain personality traits became connected with each stone and those born in the month it represents. This marked the beginning of what we know as the birthstone. The modern day list of birthstones was made official in 1912 by the American National Association of Jewelers and remains largely unchanged with only a few alterations. To view this list, check out the comprehensive Birthstone Guide at Amoro.com. As far as birthstone lore, some beliefs associated with the stones remain with us today. Some ancient cultures believed that wearing a birthstone ring would allow the power of the gem to be transferred from the bejeweled finger to a specific area of the body. For example, the third finger of the left hand transferred energy to the heart, which is why it is traditionally used for an engagement ring. “Supernatural powers have long been attributed by astrologers to certain gemstones. Wearing the gem associated with one’s birthday is commonly thought to bring good luck or health.” —Encyclopedia Britannica Around the world, the popularity of birthstones and birthstone jewelery remains prevalent. Many of us are still fascinated and intrigued by the connection between gems, the zodiac and our own nature. Amoro has made it easier than ever to show off your birthstone with style and elegance.
